Barrington Tops:
|
To get to the top of the tops will take you around two
hours from Green Point. Find your way to Gloucester and then follow
the signs to Barrington Tops. There are some excellent look outs along
the way and some fabulous picnic spots by the river and in the forest.
If you want to make a long day of it you can go all the way to Moonan
Flats pub (yup, real 'Deliverance Country') for an early lunch, and
then do a loop through the Hunter Valley and back up the Pacific Highway.
The whole trip can take eight to ten hours easy driving and a few breaks.
A good trip for a seriously scenic day out in some fine country.

Seal Rocks Lighthouse:
|
Seal Rocks is one of those very special places that exudes personality through its tiny community and topography. Seal Rocks is the second most easterly point in Australia, after Byron Bay, and is reached by turning off the Lakesway just passed Bungwahl (from the direction of Forster). The road is approximately twelve kilometers with an eight kilometer stretch of dirt (condition depends on whether the grader has been out recently). Follow the road to the very end and you can park and then follow the track up to the Seal Rocks Lighthouse for the best views south along Lighthouse Beach all the way to Nelson Bay. If you're lucky (and the season is right) you can see the annual migration of whales. On the way back stop off at the post office and buy an ice block and soak up the view of Boat Beach. If you want to explore further, turn left and follow the road through the national park to Treachery and Yagon campsites. You may have to pay to park at Treachery but Yagon is free (unless you run into a National Parks officer who may try to levy a parking fee). There is an interesting walk through to the beach from Yagon to enjoy one of the wildest stretches of coastlines in New South Wales. Total time around three to four hours. |

Eland - Comboyne Loop:
|
Elands, in its own way, is the mid north coast's answer to Nimbin. The village has a very tight knit community of alternative living lifestylers' amid some very rich farming country. To get there go to Wingham and follow the signposts. It's a very pretty drive with an awesome climb up the mountain that offers panoramic views of the Manning Valley amid some stunning flora. Once at the top the Ellenborough Falls is a must see particularly if there has been some rain. The falls is Australia's highest single drop waterfall at 160 meters. From Eland's you can follow the road over the Comboyne plateau to come out at Kew or further up at the Pacific Highway near Wauchope. By this time if you are in need of refreshments it's worth paying a visit to Cassegrain Winery that offers some excellent wine tasting or lunch at their award winning restaurant, Ça Marche . Total time around six hours, depending on stops (and siesta after wine tasting). |
|
Bombah Point Ferry:
|
Drive to Bulahdelah along the Lakesway and turn left
just before the bridge along Bombah Point Road to the ferry. At Bombah
Point there are facilities at Legges Camp for lunch, coffee, refreshments
etc. Once over the Myall Lake follow the track to the townships of Hawks
Nest and Tea Gardens which are on the opposite side of the Bay to Nelson's
Bay. There is a pub at Tea Gardens where you can enjoy a cold beer and
then follow the road back to the Pacific Highway and home. Total time
around four to five hours including stops.

|
Coomba from Whoota Lookout:
|
You can see Coomba Park right opposite Green Point.
If you are energetic you can paddle over there in around thirty minutes,
otherwise the drive is around thirty five minutes along the Lakesway
and then right along the Coomba Road. The drive is very picturesque
with some great views of Wallis Lake and a couple of decent picnic spots
as well. Once at Coomba there is the village shop where you can buy
essentials like chocolate, ice creams and beer. Five minutes walk from
the shop is a small park with tables, chairs, netted swimming and swings
for the kids. Coomba Road is excellent for kangaroo spotting but usually
only early in the morning. Total time around two hours including stops.
|
| Wallingat State Reserve: |
Access the park either from the Lakes Way - Stoney Creek Rd or off the Coomba Rd. There are three points of interest:
Once you are in the forest, what you see is
..yes, you guessed
it, trees. The river is picturesque and the Lookout is stunning. Total
time around two hours (depending on how much you like trees). |
